So here's the real truth about why I, for the first time, followed a season of the Bachelorette: On my ride into work several months ago, I was reading about the previous day's announcement of the first black Bachelorette. I had no idea who Rachel Lindsay was or that she had been one of the final contestants on the Bachelor. When I got to the GMA studios that morning, I was walking through the hallway and passed one of the private dressing rooms, and I had to do a double take. Rachel Lindsay, the woman I was just reading about in the car, was in the makeup chair and preparing to make an appearance on GMA. I walked right into the dressing room, closed the door behind me, and I don't even think I introduced myself. Instead, the first thing I said to her was, "Sista, I'm worried about you." She immediately understood what I meant, and we started a conversation about the pressures of being "the first" on the Bachelor/Bachelorette series. Would there be pressure to select a black mate? Would she be criticized if she chose a white guy? Could she live up to expectations of representing all black women? And so on and so on. We spoke for a while that day, then spent more time a couple of months later at the ABC offices in LA, as well as the ESPYs in July. So I watched because I was invested in her, her journey, and her success. I had a blast live tweeting every week and having her talk ish to me via Twitter. (It's worse via text) I applaud how she handled herself throughout, I'm proud of her, & I'm proud to know her. Congratulations, Rachel. @therachlindsay #thebachelorette @goodmorningamerica
